North River Cape Breton Tapestry sampler

A beautiful sunset scene over the North River estuary in Cape Breton inspired me for a triptych tapestry. Having never tried to work a tapestry where the subject is a landscape, I developed a small sample of a side panel. I produced about a dozen small watercolour paintings to capture the feel of the scene I wanted in the tapestry. Each painting had a bit of what I was looking for, but there wasn’t one that was just right. After 12 of these, I decided I would just begin weaving and use each of the paintings as a reference. The result isn’t exactly what I wanted but it leaves me with a good idea about how to work up the final piece.
